How many passengers can a private jet carry?

How many passengers can a private jet carry? It depends on the model and on how its cabin has been laid out: published maximums run from about 10 seats on smaller jets to 19 on the largest. The number printed in a brochure is a ceiling, and the aircraft you'd actually fly may have fewer seats.

Here are figures from five manufacturers' own pages, to give a feel for the range. They're maximums, not promises for any particular charter.

Aircraft What the manufacturer says
Beechcraft King Air 360 (turboprop) Up to 11 occupants
Pilatus PC-24 (light jet) Offered as a 6-seat executive, 8-seat double club or 10-seat commuter layout, among others
Bombardier Challenger 3500 (super-midsize jet) Flexible seating for up to 10 passengers
Gulfstream G700 (large-cabin jet) Layouts for as many as 19 passengers, with sleeping space for up to 13
Airbus H145 (helicopter) Up to 8 passengers in a standard layout, or up to 10 in a high-density one

Why the seat count isn't one number

Look at the PC-24 row. The same aircraft is offered with six seats in an executive layout or ten in a commuter layout. Which one you get depends on how that particular aircraft was fitted out, and a charter cabin is usually set up for comfort rather than for the maximum.

On the large end, Gulfstream's own G700 page lists three configurations with different totals: up to 13, up to 19 and up to 18 passengers. So even "the G700" isn't a single answer.

Passengers aren't the only load

Seats are only part of the picture. Range figures assume a particular load, and a fuller cabin leaves less fuel capacity for the same weight. Embraer states its Phenom 300EV range for five occupants at 200 lb (91 kg) each. Bombardier states the Challenger 3500 range for four passengers and two crew. If you're filling every seat, or carrying a lot of luggage, the range you can count on may be shorter than the headline figure. We cover that more in choosing a charter jet by passengers and range.

What to tell us, and what to ask

When you ask for a quote:

  • Give the exact number of people, children included.
  • Mention luggage that is out of the ordinary, such as golf clubs or equipment.
  • Say if anyone needs more room or a particular seat arrangement.

When you get one:

  • Ask for the seat count of the specific aircraft, not just the model.
  • Ask what the range is with your load, not just the brochure maximum.
  • If the aircraft is substituted, ask whether the seat count changes. Our piece on what happens when a flight is delayed or changed explains why that can happen.

If your group is large, a helicopter isn't always the answer either; see jet or helicopter: which suits your trip.

You can browse the aircraft we can arrange on the Fleet page, check which can reach a destination with the Range Explorer, or tell us about your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is the manufacturer's seat count what I will actually get?

Not necessarily. It's a maximum for the aircraft, and many are fitted with fewer seats. The Pilatus PC-24, for example, is offered as a 6-seat, 8-seat or 10-seat commuter layout. Ask for the seat count of the exact aircraft.

Do passengers and luggage affect how far the aircraft can fly?

Yes. Manufacturers state the load behind their range figures. Embraer's Phenom 300EV figures assume five occupants at 200 lb each, and Bombardier's Challenger 3500 figure assumes four passengers and two crew.

Should I count children as passengers?

Count everyone who needs a seat when you ask for a quote, children included. It's the simplest way to avoid a change later.
